Modern Foreign Languages (MFL): Curriculum Content (Year 7)

The outline below in an indication of the syllabus taught in Year 7.  Please note that this should be read in conjunction with the Homework Policy which can be found on page 19 of the Handbook for Parents and Students which is distributed at the beginning of each year.
 

Year 7:

How is MFL taught?
MFL is taught in two bands: 'x' (Houses CFJ) and 'y' (Houses MRT).
Band 'x' consists of four groups, two French groups and two Spanish groups.
Band 'y' consists of four groups, two Spanish groups and two Mandarin groups.
 
Topics covered in FRENCH:
Introductions:   Meeting people, school objects and the alphabet, numbers, ages, months, birthdays, cultural information about France and French speaking countries.
Family and Friends:  Brothers and sisters, family members, animals, describing yourself and others character and appearance
Home:   Town or country, rooms and furniture, activities you do, telling the time.
Town:    Places in town, directions, where you are going, opinions, ordering drinks and snacks.
School:  Daily routine, school subjects, opinions and reasons, school timetable, what you do after school
Leisure:  Sports and games, playing a musical instrument, hobbies, what you like doing, holidays
Grammar:  Pronouns, definite and indefinite article, regular and irregular verbs, adjectives and agreements, possessives, nouns – masculine, feminine, singular, plurals, simple prepositions, questions, reflexive verbs, intensifiers and connectives,
 
Topics covered in SPANISH:
Introductions: name, age, birthday, alphabet, in the classroom.
School: subjects, activities in lessons, describing teachers, opinions on subjects, in the cafeteria.
Family: relatives, numbers to 100, pets, colours, appearance and character.
At home: describing where you live, what your house is like, your bedroom and activities in your bedroom.
Hobbies: what you do in your free time, telling the time, sports, saying what you like to do and what you are going to do.
In the town: describing the town, places around the town, invitations to go out, weather, what you are going to do in the town this weekend.
 
Topics covered in Mandarin:
Introductions:  Meeting people, school objects, the alphabet, numbers, ages, months, birthdays, classroom language, colours, cognates, cultural information about China.
Family and Friends:  Brothers and sisters, family members, animals, describing yourself and others’ character and appearance.
Home:  Town or country, rooms and furniture, activities you do, telling the time.
Town:  Places in town, directions, where you are going, opinions, ordering drinks and snacks.
School:  Daily routine, school subjects, opinions and reasons, school timetable, what you do after school.
Leisure:  Sports and games, playing a musical instrument, hobbies, what you like doing, holidays.

National Curriculum end of unit tests Levels 1-4 (for Mandarin Level 1-3)
Continuos formal assessment
Listening.  Speaking. Reading and writing tests.
 
Types of homework:
Reading comprehension.  Letter writing.  Learning vocabulary, verbs, structures.
Graded worksheets
Crosswords, word searches, gap-fill exercises
Use of ICT to produce picture stimulus for new vocabulary and display work
Matching exercises – English to French/Spanish/Mandarin, picture to French/Spanish/Mandarin
Short reading passages to extract information or true / false exercise
Display or poster work by hand or on computer

French: 'Expo 1' textbook and individual workbook (incl. CDs and worksheets) and 'Expo Electro'. 
Mandarin:  British Council textbook.
Spanish:  'Mira 1' textbook and CDs.
All subjects include DVD’s/CD Rom: 'Cut, Paste and Surf'Interactive Whiteboard Activities.
