Religious Education (RE): Curriculum Overview (Year 7)

The outline below in an indication of the syllabus taught in Year 7.  Please note that this should be read in conjunction with the Homework Policy which can be found on page 19 of the Handbook for Parents and Students which is distributed at the beginning of each year.
 

Year 7:

How is RE taught?
RE is taught in tutor groups.
 
Topics covered:
Through the language of tale, the Bible and Christian life a study of the Christian way to happiness.
Term One: The King’s Tale, an experience of what it means to be saved, links made to Old testament and beliefs in God the Father and salvation.
Term Two: The Prince’s Tale, an experience of salvation, links made to The New Testament, and the life of Jesus in relation to our lives.
Term Three: The Travellers Tale, links made to The Christian Church and the Holy Spirit in our lives.
 
Skills:
  • Interpretation of story and Bible and application to our lives.
  • Role play and empathy
  • The ability to make links between different aspects of our study.
  • Finding Biblical texts.
  • Knowledge of KEY WORDS.
Assessment:
  • Students to monitor their own performance in relation to their target levels recorded at front of exercise book. In Years 8 and 9 self assessment and peer assessment training and implementation.
  • Teachers to mark at least 2 pieces of work every half term in detail with comments and traffic lights to indicate achievement.
  • Every half term a formal assessment is given. Students to know the success criteria. This should assess a range of skills in RE and may be in the form of a test, a group or individual presentation, a project or a piece of extended writing.
  • Formal assessment used to inform setting of future target levels.
Types of homework:
  • Completion of a topic begun in class. Diary entry or letter based on the Tale
  • Small piece of research – e.g. own baptism, communion.
  • A unit summary.
  • A leaflet e.g. guide to reconciliation.
Books/Resources
  • Each student is provided with a booklet to cover each term’s work.
  • Students need to provide own “Good News Bible”.
