Gumley awarded 'Confucius Classroom'
Gumley House achieves 'IOE Confucius Classroom' accreditation. One of only 34 schools across England.
We are delighted to announce the IOE Confucius Classroom accreditation in recognition of our commitment to Mandarin teaching.
Vision and Innovation: We identified early on that our students needed to be prepared for the global and economic changes taking place in the world and embedded Chinese within our curriculum in 2008 and strategically integrated this additional language as part of our Language and global citizenship agenda.
Gumley House School was the first school in the borough of Hounslow to teach Mandarin and nationally we are one of only 6% of state schools teaching this language.
Starting in Year 7 through to A Level our students receive a committed Chinese academic linguistic and cultural learning path supported through a range of on-going initiatives that include: a bi-annual educational and cultural trip to Beijing, video conferences, student links with the British Museum history academics, hosting teachers from different Chinese provinces to our annual language festival where students showcase their skills.
Students at Gumley House School can learn one of 3 languages in Year 7 and from Year 8 many are able to increase this to 2 additional languages.
Confucius Classroom: The IOE CI is a bilateral project with Peking University and Peking University High School and supported by the Office of Chinese Language Council International, Hanban. The IOE CI has a network of 34 Confucius Classrooms across England, schools which have both Chinese firmly embedded in their own curriculum and which give advice, support and taster classes to other schools in their region looking to start offering Chinese.
Extending Innovative Learning: Primary School Partnerships: One of our key objectives starting in the 2015-2016 academic year is that Gumley House School will be providng teaching support to embed Mandarin learning into local primary schools enabling younger students to access this skill and knowledge, we will begin with one primary partnership and then expand to other schools in the future.
